THE GHOSTS OF BELFAST

Stuart Neville

"A crime novel that counts among the best brought out this calendar year."
--Los Angeles Times

Dear Soho Crime/Soho Constable fans,

Book Expo 2010, the largest gathering of publishers, agents, authors, librarians, and booksellers in the US is just around the corner, and as usual we have some special Soho Crime events lined up for it. We even had some T-shirts made up.

We're kicking off the festivities with a party on Tuesday, May 25th @7 p.m. at Partners and Crime Bookstore in New York City. Join us for an evening of murderous chit chat, booze, and snacks featuring Soho Press authors James Benn, Cara Black, Henry Chang, and Mick Herron, who will be in attendance signing their latest mysteries and available backlist titles. This event is free and open to the public.

For those of you who will be at BEA, those same authors will be signing books Wednesday morning between 10:00 and 11:30AM in the autographing area. James Benn will be signing advance copies of his newest Billy Boyle mystery RAG AND BONE, while Henry Chang will sign advance copies of the third Jack Yu investigation RED JADE. If you can't make it to the autographing area then, Black, Benn, and Chang will also be signing at the Mystery Writers of America booth later in the day.

Finally, make sure you stop by our own booth (#4505) to pick up advance copies of COLLUSION, Stuart Neville's highly anticipated sequel to last year's award-winning (see sidebar) THE GHOSTS OF BELFAST. We'll also have water-pistols and tote bags, but they're all first-come, first-serve, so hurry before they run out.

In other news, both Jassy Mackenzie's debut Random Violence, set in post-Apartheid Johannesburg, and Barbara Cleverly's latest Joe Sandilands mystery Strange Images of Death, have garnered impressive reviews in The New York Times Book Review. Scroll down to read more.

RANDOM VIOLENCE
Jassy Mackenzie
random violenceAfter ten years in England, South African P.I. Jade de Jong returns to violent Johannesburg

Helping Superintendent David Patel to investigate a case of car-jacking and murder leads Jade to a series of brutal and apparently senseless killings which turn out to be a carefully plotted scheme for profit--by her father's murderer.

JASSY MACKENZIE was born in Rhodesia and moved to South Africa when she was eight years old. She has actually been carjacked at gunpoint outside her home. She is thirty-seven years old and lives in Kyalami with her partner, Dion, two horses and two cats. She edits and writes for the annual publication Best of South Africa. Stolen Lives, the next book in the Jade de Jong series, will be published by Soho Crime in Spring 2011.

"[A] hard edged first novel.... Even as Mackenzie captures Johannesburg's 'crazy boomtown energy,' she doesn't shy away from the rough stuff. None of which, it should be said, is quite rough enough to scare this remarkable new sleuth, whose future exploits should be worth watching."--The New York Times Book Review

Starred Review: "Set in contemporary South Africa, Mackenzie's triumphant debut introduces PI Jade de Jong.... The plot has more than its fair share of nice twists, and Mackenzie does a superb job of making the reader care for her gutsy lead while offering a glimpse at life in South Africa after apartheid. Readers will wish Jade a long fictional career."--Publishers Weekly
STRANGE IMAGES OF DEATH
Barbara Cleverly
strange images of deathIn a Provence chateau in 1926, a murder and a missing child echo centuries-old crimes

Scotland Yard detective Joe Sandilands is on leave, dropping off his niece at an ancient French chateau. After a murder and a kidnapping, Joe must delve into a horror story from the past to solve these contemporary crimes.

BARBARA CLEVERLY is a former teacher and a graduate of Durham University who now lives in Cambridge, England. Her debut, The Last Kashmiri Rose, was a New York Times Notable Book of 2002.

"Cleverly has written a cunning variation on the country-house whodunit.... Cleverly is a great strategist, and this intricately plotted mystery is one of her best."--The New York Times Book Review

Starred Review: "Excellent.... Golden age fans who appreciate deceptive storytelling enhanced by the kind of in-depth characterization lacking in Agatha Christie will be more than satisfied."--Publishers Weekly
