The Rose Variations

Marisha Chamberlain

Rose always found harmony in her music. Why couldn't she find it in her life?

February 2010 | Fiction
Paperback
978-1-56947-618-5

"Reason to Read: Rose is fiercely independent and unapologetically flawed. Chamberlain, a noted poet and playwright, has written an engaging first novel "—More Magazine

"Like its heroine, this novel is thoroughly likable….Chamberlain's creation of a character real, rich, and sympathetic enough to merit our interest and, even, to earn our advocacy. And that is a success on a scale that any musical, or literary, prodigy might hope for. "—Minneapolis Star-Tribune

"In her first novel, poet and playwright Chamberlain tells the vibrant story of Rose McGregor, a talented composer navigating academia in the early days of feminism….Chamberlain makes a charming, quirky fugue of Rose’s pursuit of love, independence and success."—Publishers Weekly

Synopsis:

In 1975, 25-year-old Rose takes a temporary professorship at a Midwestern college, convinced that an exciting career as a composer lies ahead. Determined to stay independent, she struggles with love, loneliness, ambition, and the perplexing question of happiness.
