Welcome to our first installment of the Soho Press Book Club! Each month will feature the latest and greatest from our literary fiction imprint, and a fine lineup of award-winning and bestselling writers to boot. We hope you enjoy!
I will be personally curating the book club, and posting throughout the month with insights, questions, and extra materials, like letters from the editor and author interviews. It’s going to be a smorgasbord of literary tidbits that I can’t wait to share with you. Discussion is encouraged, dissent expected, and a good time assured for all.
But wait, you might say…what about the Soho Lit books that aren’t in the book club? How to get a hold of them? Well, there’s always the bookstore. But each month, if you and/or your book club send along proof of having read the book (please, show this however you like…but, please, keep your clothes on) we’ll send you a very worthwhile grab bag of Soho goodies.
Without further ado! Our first Soho Book Club selection is Indie Next Selection:
THE ANGEL MAKERS
By Jessica Gregson
Based on the true story of “The Angel Makers of Nagyrév,” The Angel Makers tells the story of the women of a provincial Hungarian village, who discover an unfamiliar sense of freedom and independence when the men leave to fight in World War I.
Sari, a young woman considered to be a witch for her vast knowledge of healing herbs and inquisitive nature, begins a relationship with an injured Italian POW housed nearby. Swept up in an intellectual and passionate love affair with a university professor, Sari’s mind and body awaken for the first time.
But when the men of the village return Sari’s freedom—and her newfound friendships—are imperiled. Just as Sari knows the herbs that will heal, she knows as well those that will kill. It takes several weeks for the arsenic, sprinkled in her fiancé’s food, to finish him off. The first poisoning leads to another, and then another…
So, as you can tell, this is a book with the plot chops as well as being fantastically written. Join me! Let’s discuss! Get the book here and come back on April 15th for some discussion questions, and on the 30th for an exclusive author interview. Any questions? bookclub@sohopress.com
Happy reading!
